Millions of Americans with glaucoma go undiagnosed until it’s too late! Glaucoma is known as the “Sneak Thief of Sight” because in there are no symptoms in its early stages and if left untreated, it can cause blindness.
The doctors at Martinelli Eye Care specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. Glaucoma can be controlled and this is why it is so important to have regular eye exams. We invest in the latest technology allowing us to detect signs of glaucoma in the early stages and begin the most advanced treatments available to protect your vision.
If you are over 40, you should contact Martinelli Eye Care and Laser to schedule an eye exam every year. African-Americans, or those who have a family history of glaucoma are at higher risk for the disease and should have eye examines and eye pressure checks annually.
The most common type of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma. The disease is a result of pressure inside the eye that is too high for the optic nerve to tolerate, resulting in damage to the nerve which then causes a loss of side or peripheral vision. Unfortunately there is no pain or other symptoms until after vision loss has occurred. It is a leading cause of blindness, but if caught early it can be controlled.
Narrow-angle glaucoma is much less common and is very different from open-angle glaucoma in that eye pressure usually goes up very fast. There is usually severe pain in the eye or brow ache over the eye, along with redness, swelling, haloes around lights and blurred vision. If not treated promptly, this glaucoma produces blindness in the affected eye in a short period of time.
